A hill fort near Pune that served as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's first capital before Raigad, captured in 1647 and held as a key Maratha stronghold for over two decades. Its intact double-walled fortifications, the Ballekilla (citadel) and expansive plateau made it one of the most formidable forts of the Maratha Empire. Sinhagad, meaning "Lion's Fort", was renamed after the 1670 Battle of Sinhagad in which Maratha general Tanaji Malusare died recapturing it. It remains one of the most-visited trekking forts near Pune.
Did you know? Sinhagad Fort was the site of one of the most storied battles in Maratha history — the 1670 assault led by Tanaji Malusare, who used a monitor lizard tied to a rope to scale the cliff walls, a story still commemorated in Maharashtra folklore.
