One of the network of hill forts associated with Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Purandar Fort was the site of a pivotal 1665 treaty between Shivaji and Mughal general Jai Singh I, under which Shivaji ceded several forts to the Mughals. The fort's twin peaks, Purandar and the adjoining Vajragad, offered a formidable defensive position in the Sahyadri hills. It remains partly under Indian Army control, with public access to select areas. The fort is a popular trekking destination near Pune.
