A remote hill fort in the Sahyadri range near Pune, historically significant as the site where Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj first raised the flag of Swarajya (self-rule) in 1645-46, marking the symbolic birth of the Maratha Empire. Its rugged, largely unrestored ramparts and the twin-pronged Sanjeevani and Suvela machis (fortified ridges) make it a challenging but rewarding trek. The fort remains free to visit with no formal ticketing infrastructure. It is considered one of the most historically significant Maratha forts.
Did you know? Rajgad served as Shivaji's capital for over 25 years before he moved his seat of power to Raigad — its three-pronged ridge design made it one of the most naturally defensible forts in the entire Maratha network.
