About
One of the eight forts credited to Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's early campaigns, and his birthplace in 1630. Perched atop a steep hill in the Western Ghats near Junnar, the fort offered a naturally defensible stronghold that shaped Shivaji's childhood and early military strategy. It retains bastions, water cisterns and a temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai, after whom Shivaji was named. The fort remains a popular trekking destination and a site of pilgrimage in Maratha history.
Did you know? Shivneri Fort is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire, born here in 1630 — a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai, after whom he was named, still stands within the fort.
