About
Built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, King Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, this stepwell descends seven levels underground and is lined with over 500 principal sculptures and 1,000 minor ones, mostly depicting Vishnu's various avatars. It was buried under silt from the nearby Saraswati River for centuries before being rediscovered and excavated in the 1980s.
Did you know? Rani-ki-Vav is featured on the reverse side of India's ₹100 currency note, introduced in 2018 — making it one of the very few UNESCO sites to appear on the country's paper money.
