A queen built this stepwell seven levels deep in memory of her husband. Silt buried it for centuries, and when it was excavated in the 1980s, over 500 sculptures were waiting.
Built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, King Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty, this stepwell descends seven levels underground and is lined with over 500 principal sculptures and 1,000 minor ones, mostly depicting Vishnu's various avatars. It was buried under silt from the nearby Saraswati River for centuries before being rediscovered and excavated in the 1980s.
