Formerly known as Victoria Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is Mumbai's principal railway station and one of the busiest in India, completed in 1888 by architect Frederick William Stevens. Its Victorian Gothic Revival design incorporates traditional Indian architectural motifs, domes and stone carvings, blending British and Indian influences into one of the most photographed railway buildings in the world. Renamed after Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The station remains fully operational today, carrying millions of commuters daily alongside its heritage gallery.
Did you know? CST was built in 1888 to resemble a medieval Italian palazzo crossed with a Mughal palace — its stone dome, gargoyles and a statue of "Progress" atop the central spire were carved by students of the Sir J.J. School of Art, blending British Gothic ambition with distinctly Indian craftsmanship.
