Marking the exact spot where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath a Bodhi tree around the 6th century BCE, this is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely in brick still standing in India, with its current structure dating largely to the 5th–6th century CE. Ashoka is believed to have built the first shrine here in the 3rd century BCE.
