Nearly a thousand years ago the work stopped mid-construction. The ramp used to haul stones to the roof still lies beside a Shivalinga nearly 7.5 feet tall.

Sikandar Begum, one of four women who ruled Bhopal in succession, built this pink-and-white mosque as a smaller echo of Delhi's Jama Masjid.
Begun in the 1870s under Begum Shah Jahan of Bhopal, it was not completed until the 1980s, and it is now among the largest mosques in the world.
