Rishikesh's oldest temple, its dome capped by a single 125-tonne block of rock, was rebuilt after a 1398 invasion.
Here Shiva is believed to have swallowed the poison Halahala that rose during the churning of the ocean. The temple's spire shows gods and demons at that churning.

By belief, three sacred rivers, the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati, meet here, and the ghat is renowned for its nightly Ganga Aarti.
