About
A cluster of over 750 rock shelters spread across 10 km of sandstone outcrops, Bhimbetka contains some of the earliest known traces of human life in India, with paintings spanning from the Mesolithic period (over 10,000 years ago) through to medieval times — depicting hunting scenes, dancing figures, animals and rituals in continuous artistic use for millennia.
Did you know? The name "Bhimbetka" comes from local legend, meaning "sitting place of Bhima" — one of the five Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata, said to have rested here during their exile.
