About

India's first museum dedicated entirely to the history of Indian cinema, opened in 2019 within the restored Gulshan Mahal, a 19th-century Indo-Saracenic bungalow in Mumbai's Fort area. Exhibits trace Indian film history from silent-era pioneers like Dadasaheb Phalke through to Bollywood's global rise, using memorabilia, costumes and interactive displays. It is run by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The museum combines a heritage building with a subject matter central to Mumbai's cultural identity.

Did you know? The National Museum of Indian Cinema traces Indian film history back to the Lumière Brothers' first screening in Bombay in 1896 — just months after cinema's global debut in Paris — making India one of the earliest adopters of the medium worldwide.
