A group of Buddhist rock-cut caves carved into a hillside in Jogeshwari, believed to date from the 6th century CE and among the earliest Hindu-Buddhist syncretic cave complexes in the Mumbai region. The main cave features a large central hall with Shiva-linked sculptures, reflecting a later transition from Buddhist to Hindu worship at the site. Unlike the better-known Elephanta and Kanheri caves, Jogeshwari receives relatively few visitors and much of its carving has suffered from weathering and vandalism over the centuries. It remains free to visit, with donations welcomed for upkeep.
Did you know? Jogeshwari Caves, though less famous than Elephanta or Kanheri, are believed to be among the oldest Hindu cave temples in India — some scholars date parts of the complex to the 6th century CE, predating even the Elephanta Caves.
