Built in the mid-13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Sun Temple is designed as a colossal stone chariot for the sun god Surya, mounted on 24 elaborately carved wheels and drawn by seven stone horses. Its scale and ambition, much of the original tower has since collapsed, earned it the name "Black Pagoda" among European sailors, who used it as a navigational landmark.
Did you know? Each of the temple's 24 wheels functions as an accurate sundial, the shadow cast by the spokes can be read to tell the precise time of day, down to the minute.
