About
Built in the mid-13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Sun Temple is designed as a colossal stone chariot for the sun god Surya, mounted on 24 elaborately carved wheels and drawn by seven stone horses. Its scale and ambition — much of the original tower has since collapsed — earned it the name "Black Pagoda" among European sailors, who used it as a navigational landmark.
Did you know? Each of the temple's 24 wheels functions as an accurate sundial — the shadow cast by the spokes can be read to tell the precise time of day, down to the minute.
