About
Built between 1121 and 1160 CE by King Vishnuvardhana as the centrepiece of Dorasamudra, the Hoysala capital, this Shiva temple is renowned for its dense, almost overwhelming sculptural narrative bands wrapping the entire plinth — depicting epics, mythical beasts, and thousands of intricately carved figures. Twice sacked by Delhi Sultanate armies in the 14th century, it survives without its original superstructure but remains one of the finest examples of Hoysala artistry.
Did you know? The temple was never fully completed — despite over a century of continuous work by generations of master sculptors, part of its planned superstructure was never built, yet it's still considered one of the greatest achievements of Hoysala art.
