A major Tibetan Buddhist monastery rebuilt in the 1960s by the 16th Karmapa after fleeing Tibet, now the principal seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet.

Did you know? Rumtek's original monastery dates to the 1740s, under the 12th Karmapa. When the 16th Karmapa arrived in Sikkim in 1959, fleeing Tibet, it was in ruins, and he rebuilt it as his seat in exile.
