A five-storey ornately carved stepwell built in 1499, descending deep underground to provide cool, shaded access to water in a semi-arid region, its walls covered in intricate floral and mythological carvings.

Did you know? Local legend holds the stepwell was commissioned by a queen mourning her husband, a Vaghela king killed in battle, only for the victorious sultan who built it to complete construction and then propose marriage to her.
