About

India's largest mosque, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and completed in 1656 after six years of construction. Its courtyard can hold up to 25,000 worshippers, and its three great gates, four towers and two 40-metre minarets dominate the Old Delhi skyline. Relics attributed to the Prophet Muhammad are preserved inside. Climbing the southern minaret offers one of the best panoramic views over the walled city.

Did you know? Jama Masjid, completed in 1656 by Shah Jahan, can hold up to 25,000 worshippers in its courtyard at once and is believed to house relics including a hair from the Prophet Muhammad's beard and an antique copy of the Quran written on deerskin.
