About
Founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1901 as an experimental school rooted in nature and open-air learning, Santiniketan grew into Visva-Bharati University in 1921 — conceived as a meeting ground between Indian and global cultures. Its low-rise, tree-shaded campus and distinctive open-air classrooms reflect Tagore's philosophy that education should unfold in harmony with nature rather than behind closed walls.
Did you know? Tagore, who became Asia's first Nobel laureate in 1913, personally shaped Santiniketan's teaching philosophy around holding classes outdoors under trees — a practice called "Path Bhavana" that continues at the university today.
